Kibabii University has marked its third edition of a cultural week, the first one after the university was issued with a charter by his excellence president Uhuru Kenyatta.
The cultural week opened its doors on Thursday the 18th of February with the theme; “Unity, innovation and cultural diversity the pride of our national heritage,” with an aim of celebrating different cultures from different communities.
Kibabii University is one of the fastest growing higher learning institutions in the western region and Kenya at large; with a number of classy infrastructures that makes the environment conducive for learning.
Diversity is a vocabulary that is well taken care of inside the well mannered university as people of all walks of life are represented here.
The occasion started on a high note with students who represented the university at different stages being awarded with trophies, eg in sports, drama, and other games.
Lots of entertainment and presentations took the better part of the first day giving the ears of those present a good drilling and reason of being part of the great audience and staff that turned out to enjoy the sweet moments.
Professor Egara Kebaji, the Deputy Vice Chancellor at Masinde Muliro that happens to be the mother of Kibabii University, opened officially the cultural week and gave it powers to run for four consecutive days.
The professor asked all students to embrace the cultural week, and take their time to learn different cultures and appreciate them as a way of bringing harmony and respect across the university environment.
“For our country to achieve vision 2030 dream, the cultural pillar must be added to the three existing pillars of economical, political and social,” said professor Kebaji.
He added that there is no one who can claim to be a nationalist without embracing the pillar of culture that brings people together and make them be part of the society.
“I know that soon you are going to elect your student leaders, avoid aligning yourselves in tribal lines to be able to get the right people who will champion your affairs well,” said Kebaji.
Among the guests was the Deputy Commander in charge of traffic Elvis Kipkemboi who was invited to tackle road safety.
Kipkemboi started by saying that it was too sad to see people losing life’s on the roads just because of small mistakes and ignorance.
“We have to be careful while on our roads and make sure we observe all the set rules in order to reduce road carnage. Ensure you use the zebra crossing areas, walk on the right side of the road and don’t drink and drive,” echoed the Deputy Commander.
He added that already twenty two lives have been lost on the roads in Bungoma south only since the year began.
“Make sure you observe the speed limits put in place. Don’t use your phones while driving. Don’t overload your motorbikes with more than one passenger and remember to wear reflector jackets and helmets any time on a motorbike. He warned.
The Vice Chancellor of Kibabii University, Professor Isaac Impara Odeo, congratulated the students for their well watered behaviors, that has led to peaceful coexistence in the university.
He also asked the students to use the right channels while airing their grievances as running on the roads and storming vehicles and innocent people is not always a solution to their problems.
Day two of the cultural week was set aside for exhibitions of all African dishes and drinks, traditional artifacts, cultural exhibits, academic innovations and cultural attires from different communities.
The night of day two witnessed the competition of the Beauty Pageant.
The runway was full of beauty and handsomeness from all the contestants who lined up to try their luck to emerge the flag bearers of the beautiful and appealing title of MR and MISS Kibabii.
The contestant wore different attires ranging from office wear, traditional wear, beach wear, carrier wear and casual wear, and then dinner wear that closed the stage.
Mr and Miss Kibabii is a title that is admired by many as it comes with a number of privileges and favour beside being a carrier in the modelling industry.
Wellington Omondi was crowned Mr. Flex and Remmy Cheruyot crowned Mr. Kibabii University.
Day three was scheduled with sports events and disco giving lovers of music and entertainment as whole an opportunity to forget their sorrows and throw their hands in air and enjoy the cultural week to the fullest.
It was an event that run for four consecutive days with Sunday gracing the closing day ceremony with an inter denominational service to thank the Almighty for making the whole event a success.
