Interior PS Karanja Kibicho has warned chiefs against solving defilement cases in Kangaroo courts. Speaking in Kakamega where he met assistant commissioners, chiefs, their assistants and other stakeholders in the security sector, Kibicho said that cases have been reported where chiefs liaise with the culprit and family members of the defiled child to end the case at home.
Kibicho also directed that all ‘busaa’ dens be closed down since it is an illegal brew, noting that they have been informed that politicians in Shinyalu and Ikolomani Sub Counties use brew dens as campaign target points. He warned that stern action will be taken against those politicians who will be found guilty of promoting the illegal brew.
He cited funeral night vigils, commonly known as ‘disco matanga’ as a major contributor to the increase of defilement cases in the western region calling upon the chiefs and their assistants to ensure that such events end by 11pm to give an ample time for people to sleep.
The PS also warned politicians of using hate speech during campaigns and their involvement with criminal gangs. He called upon them to seek assistance from police officers whenever they feel threatened.
On their part, the security officers requested that they get more facilitation in the form of offices and uniforms.
Speaking on their behalf, the principal chief of Kakamega county Francis Munialo complained that they face security challenges especially when they arrest ‘chang’aa’ brewers who get released before reaching the court or on small penalties.
The team also requested that the government issues them with risk allowance since their work is full of challenges.
