Likuyani MP. Dr. Enoch Kibunguchy has expressed his dissatisfaction with the price of maize determined by the national government.
Addressing residents at Mtoni in Nzoia ward, during a fund drive in aid of Mtoni Vocational Training College, Kibunguchy said it was disappointing for the government to arrive at Sh. 2,500 per 90kg bag of the cereal sold to the National Cereals’ and Produce Board (NCPB).
Dr. Kibunguchy said the cost of production of maize was high and that the determined price may not benefit farmers at all.
Promising to table a motion aimed at reviewing the price once parliament resumes on 9th February, 2021, Kibunguchy termed the price announced by the government as an assault on hardworking farmers.
“I want to make this point loud and clear that I am very much disappointed and dissatisfied by this price which is meant to rob off farmers’ sweat, we understand that this price includes Cess and after it has been removed that means that the farmer will receive less than sh.2, 500 per bag and for sure that is an extortion of the highest order,” said Kibunguchy adding that the price was discouraging farmers from maize farming.
At the same time Kibunguchy regretted challenges the famers were going through under the county governments proposing the ministry of agriculture to be reverted back to National government
