The 53rd Jamhuri celebration at Amtalla stadium in Kimilili Sub County was halted for a few minutes after Kibingei MCA Justus Kibaba stormed the podium to stop Kimilili parliamentary aspirant Didmus Wekesa from proceeding with his speech, claiming he was verbally attacking him.
Trouble started when Didmus claimed that he mandated the MCA to be in charge of giving out posho mills to deserving women groups in his ward who were poor to be able to help them raise some money for their needs but the MCA ended up giving to those who are close to him.
He further claimed that he issued some money to him to buy incubators, but he could not finish his statement as the MCA charged forward grabbing the microphone from him as residents and officers from the County, as well as national government, watched in disbelief.
It took the intervention of the security personnel at the stadium to separate the two as Kimilili MP Suleiman Murunga and Kimilili deputy County commissioner Reuben Loyotoman calmed down the residents to allow the event to go ahead.
Earlier, MCA Justus Kibaba had blamed corruption for the lack of development in the County and country at large, saying as the next general election approaches, Kenyans should be keen not to elect leaders whose main interest is to loot public resources instead of helping the common mwananchi.
The MP who was in charge of welcoming aspirants to address residents, couldn’t allow any other politician to give his speech as he called upon them to call for political rallies to square out their political might, saying public holidays should be respected.
He also took the opportunity to issue out CDF cheques to few funded projects in the constituency saying he is working to ensure that before the end of his term he should have completed the funding of the projects he had started.
Kimilili business fraternity chairman Robert Simiyu called upon the Nzoia Water and Sewerage Company to reduce the bills they were charging for water, saying the residents are paying a lot yet the water is not sufficient for their needs.
He also urged the Kenya Power Company to be consistent in providing their services saying many of businesses in the town depend on power yet it may not be on throughout the day causing them to incur losses.
