A 36-year old woman in Kimilili town is nursing injuries after she was beaten by her husband, who seriously maimed her. The attack happened after she asked him to give her money to buy food, and the incident has left residents shocked.
The lady, identified as Iriz Atieno, said her husband Rashid Benea, who works as a welder in Kimilili town, beat her mercilessly after she asked him for some money. She revealed that she found him with some shopping, which he was taking elsewhere.
She said the man got angry and beat her mercilessly, three teeth were bashed and her right eye was also hit badly. When she was taken to the hospital an optician confirmed that she won’t be able to use her right eye anymore given that it was adversely affected.
Her husband has been arrested and will be arraigned in Kimilili court of law to face charges.
Kimilili human rights activist Pius Simiyu Ndumba condemned the incident saying it is inhumane for a man to inflict such injuries on a lady, adding that she will have to live with the effects of the injuries for the rest of her life.
He also called upon the police to ensure they arrest culprits perpetrating such offences immediately. He said the procedure of investigating visible injuries and effects is sometimes traumatizing to the victims, and even the suspect may run away.
“This incident happened less than fifty metres from the Kimilili police station, it’s unfortunate that the police could not arrest the culprit immediately yet it is evident enough that the guy is guilty of the offence committed,” he said.
However, he called upon all other bodies that fight for the rights of women to come out in large numbers and stand with Atieno, saying she needs their support and counselling in order to rebuild her life.
