The Kenya University Students Organization (KUSO) has urged the government to improve the capacity at universities, TTCs and TVETs ahead of the Monday 5th reopening. Earlier this week, Education CS Prof. George Magoha said universities and tertiary institutions will be reopened on Monday for in-person learning, with priority given to final year students who will report on the same day. The move is the first in the process of a phased resumption of in person learning.
However, KUSO has urged the government to take care of critical points, keeping in mind the new normal caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Speaking to the press on Friday, KUSO president Anthony Manyara said more institutional capacity should be in place for the sake of social distancing, and faulted CS Magoha for failing to consult. “The reason Magoha is having lots of inconsistencies is because he doesn’t consult, he isn’t consulting students and he doesn’t consult anyone.”
Other measures the students body want implemented include handing out enough face masks and sanitizers to students and employing more lecturers and tutors in order to maintain the lecturers to students ratio. They’ve said the Ministry of Education should provide technological assistance to the institutions so as to ensure there is easier access to key libraries and that the Ministry should give reasonable notice on resumption of classes to students to avoid ambushing learners.
