MPs have been urged to pass a Bill that will pave the way for the national government to declare cancer a national disaster. Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana and Kwanza MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi also urged the government to establish a Fund that will cater for cancer treatment costs across the 47 Counties countrywide. Speaking in Kwanza constituency, the leaders said Kenyans are suffering from the burden of high cancer treatment costs.
Governor Kibwana said parliament should also come up with a Bill that will see free medical treatment for cancer implemented. He called on Count governments to heavily invest in the health sector to ensure Kenyans access affordable health services. Kwanza MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi urged residents to always visit hospitals for cancer screening, to allow for effective treatment while the scourge is still in its early stage, instead of the late stage rush. It is estimated that Kenya records at least 47,000 new cancer cases annually, with at least 30,000 deaths annually.
