The lake region economic bloc (LREB) governors led by the chairman H.E. Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya, on made a tour of Kisii County level 6 hospital and met the Kisii Council of Elders and youth leaders ahead of the 4th Summit meeting held at Kisii Sports Club on Friday.
The governors including Prof. Anyang Nyongo (Kisumu), Joyce Laboso (Bomet), Dr. Wilbur Ottichilo(Vihiga), John Nyagarama (Nyamira), Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa and Deputy governors commended governor Ongwae for the expansion and upgrading of facilities at the hospital and mainstreaming youth, gender and elders’ affairs in the county’s development agenda.
Summit delegates said the county had taken a positive step to provide a budget for elders’ council conflict resolution and peace initiatives as well as building an office block for them.
Speaking during the opening forum, the Kisii governor James Ongwae said that they are confident that the grouping will achieve ratification of the legislative instruments from 2 more member County Assemblies soon to operationalize the grouping.
Already four counties have ratified, just 2 shy of the required 6 members to legally establish the entity.
Governor Ongwae dismissed reports in a section of the local media that some member county assemblies had declined ratification of LREB bills.
“This is an ongoing process involving legislative processes and public participation,” he said.
He added that the 14 counties of the bloc with a population of 14 million people were convinced that the economic bloc was what they needed to consolidate the region’s strength and fast track on economic development.
The governor’s position was supported by Excellencies governors Wycliffe Wangamati (Bungoma), John Nyagarama (Nyamira) and deputy governors Excellencies Prof. Philip Kutima (Kakamega), Dr. Yulita Cheruiyot (Nandi), Moses Mulomi (Busia), Mathew Owili (Kisumu),Dr. James Okumbe (Busia) among others.
Kisii Senator Hon. Prof. Sam Ongeri, Women Rep Hon. Janet Ong’era and the MP for Kitutu Chache North, Hon Jimmy Angwenyi and Kisii Assembly Speaker, Hon. David Kombo were also present.
