Bungoma County; Learning activities were paralyzed at Buko primary school in Kimilili Sub County after heavy rainfall experienced in the area caused a collapse of twelve pit latrines that were being used by female pupils.
The school headmaster Fred Wasike said the unfortunate incident happened while the pupils had returned home hence no one was injured but the incident has drastically affected learning activities at the school since it was being used by a huge population.
He however pointed out that the soil in the area is weak an issue that further aggravated the collapse of the latrines saying they have to device a new method of construction next time to ensure the latrines do not collapse again.
“We are in urgent need of one million shillings to construct a new set of latrines and call upon the county government through the special programs department and other well wishers to help up raise the money before the next term kicks off.” He said.
Mr. Wasike who is also the Kimilili Sub County Kenya Primary Schools Heads Association chairman expressed his fears of another block of latrines belonging to the teachers collapsing saying he may be forced to close the school earlier than anticipated.
He further disclosed that the ongoing rains have also broken the school’s water tank which was being relied on to store water for daily usage in the school saying they are being forced to look for other sources which may not be safe for consumption.
However being the last week of third term he was optimistic that the county government together with other well wishers will come in handy to have another set of latrines be built on time so as not to affect learning activities at the school next term.
