Leaders and family members were scarce during the 16th commemoration of the late Wamalwa Kijana on Sunday in Trans Nzoia owing to the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on travelling and social gatherings. During the anniversary mass, Kitale diocese Catholic Bishop Maurice Anthony Crowley called on the government to carry out drastic investigations and bring to book officials who misused and squandered Covid-19 funds.
He wondered why the culprits are still walking around scott-free yet the funds have been pilfered by well known individuals. He noted that the stolen money is being used by the perpetrators in several businesses and some Kenyans know them. “We can’t continue suffering as a country when those people entrusted
in our monies are the ones stealing from us, it’s not right, let the
law take its course “, said agitated Crowley.
Crowley appealed to the president to lead in the fight against corruption, starting with the Health Ministry rot, adding that some hospitals are suffering due to a lack of funds that have been misused by individuals. He said such actions hurt the patients who need these funds. He appealed to leaders in both the County and national governments to put the national government to task on how the Covid-19 funds have been utilized.
His sentiments were echoed by Kwanza MCA Sarah Lubano and Keiyo MCA Emmanuel Waswa who both claimed some leaders have looted the Covid-19 funds and are using the money under the government’s watch. They appealed to all the investigating agencies to improve their efforts in investigating the manner the cash meant for Covid-19 was squandered and bring the perpetrators to book. They claimed no one is above the law and action should not be taken selectively.
