Leaders in Trans Nzoia County have criticized the manner in which the
recruitment exercise for prison officers was held claiming it was
riddled with corruption and nepotism. Kiminini MP Dr. Chris Wamalwa together with Matumbei MCA Jeremiah Wakhulia have criticized the whole exercise, claiming it was not fair as only certain communities benefited leaving out others.
Wamalwa claimed he received a public outcry report from the
public concerning the manner into the exercise was held, alleging
three officers came from one family with their parents being officers
in the prisons service.
He has threatened to take the matter to parliament to ensure the exercise is cancelled and a fresh recruitment is held, one which is fair. “I have received reports from the public in my constituency concerning
the manner in which the exercise was held. Of six officers, three came from the same family with their kin being a prisons officer,” said MP Wamalwa.
His sentiments were echoed by Matumbei MCA Jeremiah Wakhulia
who cited a case where four officers were recruited from the same ethnic group despite the sub county being cosmopolitan.
Wakhulia said the four officers were related to some senior
officers in the prisons department claiming that those without
relatives from a given community weren’t given opportunities. “I wonder because in terms of employment, the government needs to ensure
that every person irrespective of community he comes from is eligible for employment but what happened in Endebess is regrettable.” He has urged the Interior CS Dr. Fred Matiang’i to intervene and cancel the recruitment exercise.
