Leaders and various education stakeholders have been urged to ensure equitable distribution of resources to normal and special schools.
Speaking when she donated foodstuffs, diapers, sanitary towels, drinks among other necessities to St. Don Bosco Special School for the physically handicapped in Likuyani sub county, Ms. Diana Ameka regretted challenges faced by pupils and teachers at the school.
Ms. Ameka who also celebrated Valentine’s Day together with the pupils and teachers at the special school said it was disappointing that most leaders focus more attention on schools with able-bodied pupils while ignoring those with special needs pupils.
Saying disability is not inability; Ameka noted that for the disabled children to be productive members of society they must get proper education which will only be achieved under a good environment.
“For me I think we should give more support to the special schools so that we create a conducive learning environment to both teachers and these disabled learners,” said Ameka
Ameka who has declared her interest in Likuyani Ward Member of County Assembly seat has promised to work closely with other stakeholders and well-wishers to help the schools.
According to the school deputy head teacher Mrs. Anne Kamau, the school has inadequate infrastructure ranging from classrooms, dormitories and toilets, lack of proper learning material for the various special cases, shortage of teachers among others.
She also said some of the parents do not care about their children and don’t provide some of the basics forcing teachers to dig deep into their pockets to ensure they get the required items.
“We have children who need a special diet, we have those who are supposed to take milk daily, some need diapers but once their parents have dropped them here they forget about them until the closing date,” said Mrs. Kamau.
