Education CS Prof. George Magoha has affirmed that learning in schools will go on, even if Coronavirus cases in Kenya keep rising. Speaking to the press on Friday, CS Magoha said a second or third wave of the virus won’t halt academic plans, “We are not thinking of closing the schools…. Life must continue.”
The CS said Kenya’s culture is the greatest challenge to winning the war against the Covid-19 pandemic, citing the inclination to congregate as an example, “I want to challenge Kenyans to change their mindset and culture. Culture is going to destroy the best strategy that we have.” He also noted that social distancing will never be achieved in schools countrywide, owing to the high number of students.
Elsewhere, Education PS Belio Kipsang also stressed that schools won’t be closed, despite students and staff testing positive for Covid-19 in a couple of schools already. He said the virus has set its presence in different sectors across the country and schools shouldn’t be treated as isolated cases. “We should not start isolating ours schools based on a few cases. Communities also are not safe and that’s why infections are going up,” said Kipsang, adding that the government and schools are trying to create a safe environment for learners.
