UASU has insisted that the lecturers’ strike is still on. Vice Chairman Joseph Mberia stated categorically that the union is not ready to agree to anything less than Ksh. 17 billion. He insisted that the Ksh. 10 billion government offered was way below their demand.
Mberia insisted that this amount was much less considering that the number of university workers has increased by 7000 to 30,000 compared to 2013 when they were 23,000 at the time when the CBA was being signed.
He added that the offer given to them was meant to be shared among three unions and not UASU alone. He called upon the government to bow to their demands to end the scuffle. He also called upon lecturers to remain strong and no to fear being sacked. “I have been sacked five times and I don’t fear anymore,” he said.
The union has called upon the government to withdraw security forces that may be deployed in public universities.
