President Uhuru Kenyatta has urged leaders to stop political sideshows on the BBI report and focus on uniting Kenyans. The President, speaking during the launch of the report at the Bomas of Kenya, called out Deputy President William Ruto, saying he has turned his focus to 2022 politics instead of service delivery.
His sentiments came moments after the DP questioned key clauses in the report, making delegates present at the Bomas turn against him. “Time will come for politics,” he said, “It’s like we are in a relay race, where we are supposed to help each other and hand I’ve batons, but his(DP Ruto)head has already been turned and he is running in the opposite direction,” he said.
He insisted that from the start, the BBI report wasn’t meant to cater for a few positions, and called for more engagements over the report at every level of the society in order to deal with issues troubling Kenyans. He cited the dilemma facing youths, due to unemployment, “We have a youth bulge which if not properly handled, can be a time bomb that can blow the country to pieces.” He said the issue can’t be dealt with by radicalizing them but by improving the state of the economy, which he said can’t be sorted in a 5-year cycle.
He also lauded the BBI taskforce team, saying open support and corrections should be supported in order to create an open conversation.
