Over 900 families living on Kibakenge Binyenya farm in Nzoia location, Likuyani Sub County are appealing to the national government to help them receive valid title deeds for their farms bought in 1963.
Speaking to the press, the families led by former Moi’s Bridge Matunda ward Councilor, Mr. Wycliffe Makanyanga, explained how they have been struggling to gain proper ownership of the land in vain since 1963.
Makanyanga narrated how depressed families had pooled their resources together through their SACCO society before purchasing the 200 acre piece of land from two tycoons, but were later on shocked after discovering the two had used the same land to access loans from lending institutions, totaling to Ksh.300,000.
“After a few years of staying on the piece of land, banks began following the new owners over unpaid loans on which the land had been attached,” said Makanyanga who added though the affected families have been struggling to repay the same they are unable to either ascertain the accrued interests the loans had attracted or remaining balances.
“Their efforts to trace the tycoons for clarifications have always hit a snag,” added the former councilor.
Makanyanga is now appealing to leaders from the region to quickly intervene the situation and assist the families know exactly how much they were supposed to repay.
“They are worried perhaps somebody might have capitalized on the situation to defraud them of their cash,” said Makanyanga.
“And if at all there are still balances to settle, the government should in fact wave them off and assist the families get title deeds,” appealed Makanyanga.
