Residents living in Likuyani Sub County of Kakamega County have been called upon to embrace environmental conservation through planting of trees especially during the current rainy season.
Speaking at Lumino dispensary in Likuyani ward, where he led a tree planting exercise, area zonal forest manager Mr. Titus Mu said besides tree planting in gazetted forest land his department targeted to ensure that more tree seedlings are planted in individual farms and other public places in the area.
Mu underscored the significance of tree planting arguing that it was the responsibility of every citizen to play a role in environmental conservation.
This, he reiterated, was aimed at the government’s vision of achieving 10% of forest cover so as to combat climate change effects.
“Besides fighting climate change, conservation also plays a crucial role in providing income through log sales, thus alleviating poverty”, he said adding that his department was preparing to launch a massive tree planting sensitization exercise.
He called for closer bilateral relations between the community and forest managers which he said were necessary for the success of the program.
Lumino dispensary management committee chairman Cleophas Mukhutsi thanked the forest department for the exercise that saw 266 tree seedlings planted at the facility.
