A lobby group championing the interests of the victims of the 2007/08 post election violence has slammed parliament for turning a blind eye to the plight of some 310, 000 IDPs left out in the resettlement exercises.
Officials of the national IDPs network which has been lobbying for the compensation of the victims who were integrated after being left homeless feel MPs have forgotten their plight. “Integrated IDPs are those who sought refuge elsewhere after being displaced in the violence. The government had only initially
compensated 350,000 IDPs who were in 118 camps countrywide,” said the network’s secretary Raphael Eyanai.
Eyanai spoke following a visit by the parliament’s special funds committee which toured the region on a fact finding mission following the Auditor General’s report indicating funds meant for IDPs were misappropriated. “We welcome the visit by the parliamentary committee to ascertain what
is on the ground. We now want them to ensure those who were left out are considered by the government,” said Mr. Eyanai.
The MPs visited a group of 116 internally displaced families who were settled on a piece of land at Bonde area in Cherang’any but live in make shift structures for six years following delays by the government to demarcate the land. Each family has been waiting to get its individual land portion on the piece of land, totaling 300 acres.
