Matatu operators from Luanda market marched to Vihiga County Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo’s office to seek an audience with him over harassment and arbitrary arrest by the County askaris.
They decried frequent harassment from the County officers who arrest and hold them in a Kangaroo court located at the market where they are asked to pay fines, as earlier documented by West Media.
They said when one is arrested by the askaris he must give out a minimum of Kshs 3,000 as fine.
They also said that once you fail to give the protection fee to the police and the County officers, you are framed with traffic offences and arraigned in court.
Governor Ottichilo promised them he will seek ways of ending harassment and the illegal arrests of both boda boda and matatu operators in the area.
“Am going to meet the officers in charge of revenue, the head of County askaris to iron out critical issues affecting public service transport in the County,” said the Governor.
