Most politicians are fond of using long convoys of vehicles in their campaigns to attract the attention of the electorate but some of the candidates in Lugari have chosen to use ox drawn and donkey carts instead of vehicles.
During the recent clearance exercise, long convoys of vehicles and motorbikes could be seen escorting various aspirants to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission -IEBC clearance center at the Lugari Sub County headquarters in Lumakanda attracting huge crowds of people.
However, there were two aspirants who caught the attention of the residents for arriving at the clearance center in a unique style.
Daniel Wafula Juma who is vying for Mautuma Member of County Assembly seat opted to use an ox drawn cart mounted with a public address system and decorated with his portraits, Juma travelled a distance of about 15 kilometers from Mautuma to be cleared.
Speaking after being cleared, Juma said his move was a true reflection of what Kenyans were going through due to the high cost of living.
“There’s no need for me to pretend that everything is well by coming here to show off with long convoys of vehicles yet our people are suffering,” said Juma.
His sentiments were echoed by Hudson Chepkuri Musamusi an aspirant for Lumakanda Member of County Assembly seat who used a donkey cart to present his documents to the IEBC for clearance.
“Most of our people come from humble backgrounds and are going through hard times economically, we want to journey with them together and lift their living standards by empowering them economically so that they can live a better life,” said Chepkuri who is also a boda boda rider.
The move by the two aspirants has however earned the new names with the locals nicknaming them ‘mheshimiwa ng’ombe’ (honorable cow) and ‘mheshimiwa punda’ (honorable donkey).
“We don’t care about what our opponents call us but we are focused on helping our people,” they said.
