A total of 17 out of 58 public primary schools in the sub-county are yet to be connected to electricity, according to a status report submitted in the meeting by sub-county Chief Education Officer, Mr. Joshua Kosilei. Nabemo, Bahati, Frank, Ivona East, Jirongo DEB, Mukavane, Lwanda, Lugari, Mahemas, Mahiga, Marula, Mugumu and Muviki are among the
public primary schools yet to be connected to the power grid. Others are Mukuyu, Mukuyu Special Pan Paper, Muyugi and Locho.
“Though reasons for power non-connectivity vary, but majority of the affected schools are several kilometers from nearby transformers, away from the prescribed 600metres,” pointed out Kosilei. He, however, noted three schools had been connected to faulty transformers.
The official further revealed wiring had been done in Mukuyu, Mukuyu Special, and Muyugi schools, but the institutions were yet to be connected.
Ochillo instructed the department and concerned stakeholders to work closely with the Kenya Rural Electrification Authority (REA) to ensure the schools are connected to electricity supply, “For effective roll-out of the Digital Literacy Programme in the sub-county,” added the DCC.
In May 2016, the national government rolled out one of Jubilee’s flagship projects after it delivered laptops to about 11,500 class one pupils in 150 selected schools countrywide, marking actualization of the Kshs. 17 billion Digital Literacy Programme.
