Lugari and Likuyani sub counties in Kakamega County have continued to record low average voter turnouts as the nationwide mass voter listing exercise enters the last full week.
Briefing the media in his office, Lugari Sub County Returning Officer, Mr. Amos Chilai Nyongesa, said a total of 7,058 persons have registered as new voters across the six wards in the area for the past three weeks.
“This was far below our set target,” said Nyongesa, who revealed the Sub County targets
about 26,058 new voters by end of the one month exercise.
According to statistics in his office, Lumakanda ward has recorded 1,409 new
voters, Lwandeti (1,274), Chevaywa (1,140), Lugari (1,170), Mautuma (1,198) with
Chekalini trailing at 858 new voters.
Nyongesa appealed to all eligible voters in the area to use this opportunity and acquire voters cards in readiness to participate in the August general elections.
Mrs Doreen Wawire, the Returning Officer for Likuyani Sub County disclosed a total of 6,949 individuals registered as new voters in all five wards of the area.
“The overall target for Likuyani Sub County is 19,524 new voters by time the listing exercise ends on 14th of this month,” revealed Wawire.
Both election officers urged locals eligible for voting to turn out in large numbers, noting no new voters would be registered after this exercise.
Elsewhere, Lugari Sub County Registration of Persons office has appealed to owners of uncollected Identity Cards to visit Chiefs and assistant chiefs’ offices in order to pick the same.
Mr. Josphat Chunge, an official at the office, revealed over 2,000 cards were lying uncollected at the local administration offices.
“The owners, who are mostly youth, should pick the cards to enable them enlist as voters during the ongoing mass voter registration exercise,” urged Chunge.
