Lugari residents have been urged to be wary of conmen moving round the area defrauding them by purporting to register squatters to be
given portions of land in Lugari forest.
Speaking to the media, area Deputy County Commissioner William Lenaremo reiterated that the government has no plans to settle squatters on gazetted forest land in Lugari.
The DCC observed with dismay how cartels are hoodwinking and regrouping locals with the promise of getting more land from the
government by hiving some sections of the Lugari forest.
The commissioner noted with concern that over the last few months, cases of false squatters popping up have increased in the area.
“As Government, we are greatly concerned by the rising cases of fake squatters that are being created by fraudsters in this area. We know
that some locals are being pushed by cartels who want to benefit from the syndicate,” said Lenaremo.
The DCC disclosed that police have launched investigation to unearth suspects who have been enlisting people as squatters saying they
will be prosecuted soon. “We can’t entertain these people, we already have names and will not relent until they are brought to book, the government only settles those who are genuine squatters, which we did.”
