A somber mood engulfed Kipkaren market in Chekalini location, Lugari Sub County after a body of a middle aged man was retrieved from River Kipkaren.
The body was discovered by a group of youths who had gone to take a bath in the river. According to one of the youths, Julius Kosgei, he stumbled on an object under a rock as he tried to take a bath inside the river.
He said after careful examination, he discovered it was a human body. “I had come to take bath in this river as usual and later decided to swim, but as I stepped inside the water I stumbled on an object that felt like the legs of a human being,” he said “I got concerned and wanted to know what it was since I bathe here daily.”
He said after confirming it was a human body, he called for help from his friends and removed the body from the river.
Confirming the incident, Lugari sub county police commander Patrick Maundu said the deceased had on several occasions tried to commit suicide unsuccessfully.
According to the deceased’s family, on Tuesday at about 6:00 am he threw himself into a 20 ft well before he was rescued hours later after he was discovered by women who had gone to draw water.
He was later given guidance and counseling but the family was later shocked when he decided to jump into the river late in the evening and their efforts to save him for a second time proved futile as he was quickly washed down the river.
The body was taken to Chebaiywa mortuary as police launched investigation into the incident.
