A cloud of grief engulfed Mufuta village in Lugari Sub County after a 32-year-old man committed suicide by hanging himself at the door of his mother’s house. According to Mrs. Nerea Akosa Kanale his son Josiah Alela who had spent the day away returned at about 9:30 pm and asked for food. She gave him the food but instead of eating, he walked out
without uttering a word, took a rope and committed suicide right at her door.
The mother said since her son was always violent she couldn’t intervene to stop him and she opted to rush to her neighbour for help who responded quickly to her plea. He moved in and found her son dangling at the door of her house before he cut the rope he had used to hang himself.
She explained that by that time her son was still breathing and she called in a nurse who lives in the neighbourhood to administer first aid to him before he could be taken to a hospital for treatment but unfortunately he died in the hands of the nurse.
“When the rope was cut my son was still breathing and I called a nurse. She responded immediately and tried to attend to him to save his life but he died minutes later,” explained Mrs. Kanale.
The mother stated that the reason behind the incident hasn’t been established yet, saying they never had a quarrel that might’ve prompted that reaction. However, she said the deceased had on various occasions threatened to commit suicide for an undisclosed reason.
“He even warned me that he will soon die and I must take good care of his six-year-old son or else he will come for me if I mistreated him,” said Mrs. Kanale.
The body was removed by police officers from Lumakanda and taken to Webuye Sub County hospital mortuary for postmortem as an investigation into his death was launched.
