One person died at Marobo Girls Secondary School after a pit latrine he was digging collapsed on Wednesday morning in Bwaki ward, Bungoma County. Isaac Sikuku, aged 22 years, had been digging the latrine since last week Thursday and had gone about 30 metres deep when the walls collapsed while he was still digging.
“There were five people on site, I was one of them,” said Simiyu Situyma, the deceased’s friend, “We’ve known each other for ten years but we started working on the pit latrine on Thursday last week. The ground dint show any signs of giving way and we were shocked when it collapsed
The Bungoma County fire brigade led a rescue operation but it proved futile. Two excavators were also on site, one arriving around mid morning and another in the afternoon, when the body was retrieved.
Speaking after the incident, area MCA Rosemary Khisa assured residents that she will table a Bill in the County Assembly that seeks to ensure the disaster management team in the County is better equipped.
