Following the petition served to the national assembly by Manyonyi residents over destruction caused by explosives being used by a quarry company extracting stones in the area, the National Environmental Complaints Committee (NECC) toured the area to assess the damages caused.
The NECC team led by the national secretary Dr. John Kipkorir Chumo visited Simba and Nzoia quarries before holding a public baraza where residents aired out their complaints.
Led by their chairman pastor John Kadima, the residents singled out a number of permanent and semi-permanent structures including houses and toilets with cracks and torn roof-tops due to blasting of rocks.
In addition they lamented of the emission of dust and toxic fumes that emanate from the quarry which they argued was dangerous to their lives.
The residents claimed that efforts to make Nzoia Quarry Company to accept responsibility and compensate them had hit a snag.
They want the company to compensate them with adequate cash so that they can repair their fallen and cracked structures and also seek medical treatment for accompanying ailments due to the dust and toxic fumes.
Dr. Chumo assured them that their grievances had been noted and his team will work on them to have an amicable solution.
The area Deputy County Commissioner William Lenaremo appealed for calmness from the affected families as the issue was being addressed.
