Matungu MP Justus Murunga has been arrested, in the ongoing Matungu crackdown. The MP joins a high profile list that includes Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, former Sports CS Rashid Echesa and Mayoni MCA Libinus Oduor. Murunga surrendered to the police and was taken in on Saturday morning, after he had been given six hours to surrender.
Kakamega Senator Malala, Mayoni MCA Libinus Oduor and Echesa were arrested on Friday on different occasions and taken in for questioning. Malala was arrested in Kisumu while Echesa had just left a political meeting in Malinya, which Deputy President William Ruto and other prominent leaders including Western MPs had attended.
The crackdown in Matungu, Kakamega County, to nail the suspects leading the attacks on residents is gathering pace, days after Interior CS Fred Matiang’i visited the area. He announced a security operation had been put in place to track down the culprits, and that more officers had been deployed to the area including GSU officers. Some suspects have already been apprehended, including a main suspect, who security officers allege was controlling the attacks from Nairobi.
