The Ministry of Health on Friday held a consultative meeting with the Association of Doctors (KMPDU) and that of Clinical Officers (KUCO) regarding the payment of apprentice doctors.
The consultation was attended by the Secretary General of KMPDU Dr. Davji Atellah and that of KUCO George Gibore among other officials of the two parties.
Negotiations about how much money will be paid each month to doctors and clinical trainee officers are scheduled to begin on Thursday next week.
During today’s consultation on Friday, it was agreed that the terms of payment for doctors and apprentice clinical officers should be reviewed.
“We agree to renegotiate the terms of payment given by the Salaries and Benefits Commission, SRC,” said the KUCO party in a statement after the meeting.
“Apprentice clinical officers with diplomas will be paid according to their contracts.”
The government has been particularly at odds with the KMPDU party regarding the payment of apprentice doctors.
During the tenure of Susan Nakhumicha as Minister of Health, the government proposed that doctors be paid 70 thousand shillings per month, a proposal that was strongly opposed by KMPDU.
The association wants the doctors to be paid 206,000 shillings per month as previously agreed in the Memorandum of Understanding.
The court has directed all parties in the dispute to hold a new discussion with the aim of resolving the tug-of-war that initially caused a strike by doctors that hampered the provision of treatment in public hospitals across the country.
