After decades of suffering from the effects of the poor road network, residents of Webuye east and Tongaren constituency will be relieved after the 40 kilometre Misikhu-Brigadier road tarmacking project was officially launched.
Speaking at Brigadier market during the launch Bungoma Governor Kenneth Makelo Lusaka said the funding of the project is cost shared by the National Government together with the Bungoma County government.
“The National government will give out half a billion and the Country government will give out six hundred million to fund the project as it was one of the promises I made while campaigning to be governor of the people of Bungoma County and I am fulfilling it,” he said
Governor Lusaka further disclosed that the duration of the construction will take 24 months to be fully completed and called upon the contractor to ensure he does a perfect job and called upon the relevant institutions tasked to supervise and monitor the quality of work to ensure the work is up to standard.
He added that Tongaren constituency being the grain basket of the County, the Misikhu-Brigadier road will help open up access of farmers to the markets around and ease transport of Tongaren residents to neighbouring counties such as Uasin Gishu, Kakamega and Trans Nzoia.
However Soysambu/Mitua ward MCA Gerishom Namasake expressed his concern over the awarding of the tender to Midland Construction Company saying being a member of the Bungoma County Public Accounts Committee he has been able to scrutinise the roads they have previously constructed in the County saying they were not perfectly done.
He asked the contractor to ensure perfect work is delivered saying the people of Tongaren constituency have for a long time been waiting for a tarmacked road and it should be able to benefit them and the generations to come.
“The construction should not be like that of the Kimilili- Bokoli-Sikata road which after a few years of construction the road has developed countless potholes an issue that has caused many accidents and loss of lives of innocent people,” said Namasake
The governor was also accompanied by his deputy Hillary Chongwony who called upon residents to evaluate their work at the end of their first term in order to give them a chance for a second term in office saying they have delivered a lot according to their manifesto.
On the flip side, Governor Lusaka said he will cancel the tender awarded to a Chinese contractor to build a maize milling plant at Brigadier saying he has taken a long time to effect the work yet the residents are waiting to benefit from it.
