Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) in Kakamega County went on record as the first ever public university in the country where a female student has been elected as the students’ president bringing a brief reprieve to a reign of mostly male-dominated student body presidencies.

There have been only male presidents since the inception of the institution and a woman has always been granted the vice president seat.

Miss Winnie Opiyo Nyandiga trounced all the other male competitors to head the university’s Student Governing Council (SGC) after garnering 5787 votes against her closest rival Pius Angatia, who got 4063 votes.

During her swearing in Miss Nyandiga thanked all her supporters for their support and trust.

“I thank my friends and family for believing in me and also for the much needed financial and moral support they offered me,” she said.

Miss Nyandiga together with her campaign team beat all the odds and broke the stereotypes that women cannot be crowned the top seats in the institutions of higher learning and country at large to win in the hotly contested election, which was marred by ethnic alliances during the campaigns.

Miss Nyandiga who is pursuing a Bachelor of arts in Criminology in the university will now go down in the history books as the first ever elected female President in public universities in the country as most of her colleagues always settle to deputize their male counterparts.

Miss Nyandiga has ever since being crowned the top seat received bundles of congratulatory messages from university students across the country over her win.

History has it all that almost all universities in the country and even the world at large have been electing male students to lead them.

The first ever female student to be elected as a president in the university was at Georgetown University in America and this was done in the year 2012.
