Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) is now fully licensed to offer Diploma programmes in Nutrition and Dietetics.
Prof. Edward Karuri, the Chairman, Kenya Nutrition and Dietetics Institute (KNDI) Accreditation board awarded the license to the deputy vice Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Rotich after a two day inspection of the university facilities, at the Vice Chancellor’s boardroom.
Prof. Karuri commended MMUST for scoring an impressive 91.8% mark on compliance, the highest by any institution in the country, to get the certification.
He said that the 91.8% score is a reflection of an improvement of the existing programme and an indicator of suitability and capacity of the university to mount the additional Diploma programme.
The KNDI team which was comprised of the CEO, Dr. David Okeyo and Ms. Ruth Mugambi representing the Kenya Institute for Curriculum Development noted with satisfaction the remarkable improvements in the institution’s Nutrition department, especially physical facilities and equipment.
They lauded the university management for investing in quality laboratory equipment which will improve the quality of training offered to students.
The KNDI team noted that the research component at the MMUST Nutrition department has been strengthened and stressed the need for competence training.
The university also received the rights to be a National Centre of Excellence in Human Nutrition and Dietetics and it has also been granted the rights to be an Examination and Internship Centre for graduates in Clinical Nutrition and Clinical Dietetics.
Prof. Rotich thanked the KNDI board and promised that the university shall abide by all the KNDI standards so as to remain at the top.
The elated Head of Nutrition and Dietetics department at MMUST Dr. Gordon Nguka reiterated that the department will uphold the high standards of training.
The latest milestone comes against a backdrop of the KNDI certification of MMUST to train students in Human Nutrition and Dietetics at Bachelor of Science level, which MMUST was given on 14th May, 2014 by KNDI after managing a score of 88.7%.
