The Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) University’s senate and the university’s council have nominated and approved the conferment of this year’s honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters Honoris Causa to the COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli. Atwoli is set to receive the degree award on 14th December 2018 during the university’s 13th graduation ceremony that will be held at the main campus in Kakamega.
According to the MMUST university senate, Atwoli has championed social justice through progressive labor relations where he has shown unparalleled forthrightness in advocating for workers rights besides engaging in initiatives that contribute to industrial peace and ensured recognition of the contribution of workers to sustainable development through various initiatives.
They add that his contribution is in line with the UN sustainable development goal no.8 that seeks to promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth and full and productive employment and decent work for all. They outline that it is also inline with the Kenya vision 2030 specifically the the economic and social pillars. The university appreciates Atwoli’s distinguished contribution to labor relations locally and internationally, his efforts in enhancing industrial peace, his advocacy for decent work for all and his defense for workers dignity rights and welfare that is beneficial to the socio-economic development of the country. Atwoli was to receive this honor last year but due to political interference he did not make it.
