Kapenguria MP Samuel Moroto lashed out at security organs in the country for arresting leaders over the recent Matungu killings claiming the move was politically instigated.
Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, former Sports CS Rashid Echesa, Mayoni MCA Libinus Oduor and Matungu MP Justus Murunga were arrested separately on Friday and Saturday in connection with the Matungu attacks, and Malala and Echesa were later released on Sunday evening. Malala said he’ll sue Interior CS Fred Matiang’i and Police IG Hillary Mutyambai for wrongful detention.
However, Moroto said the government was targeting Jubilee leaders allied to Deputy President William Ruto, for instance, former sports cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa, just to intimidate them. He also faulted the decision to arrest them on Friday, saying putting them in custody throughout the weekend was uncalled for.
He also faulted the national government for failing to contain escalating insecurity in most parts of the country, adding that the government was harassing and demonizing leaders without having concrete evidence. He criticized security teams for being lax in the region, “We have witnessed many attacks along the Marakwet–Pokot border yet no one has stepped there. It is a shame,” he said,”On the Chepchoina scheme, GSU officers are beating people yet no action has been taken,” he said.
