Mother & baby die in Mt. Elgon sub county Hospital
Residents of Kongit in are an angry lot after an expectant mother together with her child lost their lives at Mt. Elgon Sub County Hospital in an incident that they are accusing the doctors in charge at the hospital for not performing their duties well.
Amos Tulgon a resident from Kongit said the late Bevin was brought to the facility do deliver but the doctors in charge were not near to help her leading to her death saying it was unfortunate that services at the facility were deteriorating each passing day.
He said whereas the maternity fee was scrapped off by the Jubilee government the hospital still wants the expectant mothers to buy syringes and medicine for themselves an issue he says should be looked in to by the relevant authorities.
Mr. Tulgon further disclosed that the ambulance at the facility does not help the area residents accusing the hospital management for distorting money for fuel before the vehicle is released to ferry a patient to the hospital saying the ambulance is mostly used to transport the staff.
Another resident Butali Wallace disclosed that some doctors at the hospital are drunkards which make it hard for emergency cases such as the one witnessed to be left unattended despite them having taken an oath to protect the people’s lives at all cost.
He says they have complained of the issue to the relevant authorities with no positive response coming fourth saying they have resorted to hold peaceful demonstration to push the government to conduct a reshuffle at the institution for the benefit of the residents.
Mercy Kwalia another resident said as women they are a distressed lot saying they are ready to close down the institution for not helping the residents as it ought to have been adding that they are even afraid of falling pregnant due to the predicaments.
In his response the hospital administrator Timothy Mikisi said the patient was admitted at the hospital at around midnight on Thursday night and was attended to very well by the doctor and nurses on duty but unfortunately the baby she delivered had already passed on.
He added that immediately after delivery the late started complaining of a stomach ache as and feeling hungry saying she was put on drip but unfortunately lost her life later saying she had also been reported to have been anemic.
Her body was taken to dreamland hospital mortuary in Kimilili as a post mortem is set to be carried out on the body.
