Kwanza MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi has assured his constituents of better road construction in the area in order to boost the infrastracture. The MP made the remark after locals had protested over the poor roads in the constituency, caused in part by heavy trucks that operate through the area, and also due to the heavy rainfall in the region.
Motorists voiced their complaints after being directly affected by the poor roads, “We have made losses due to the poor roads, we call upon the government through our leader MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi to ensure the roads are constructed,” said Dismus Wekesa, a matatu driver.
The area MP said it was difficult to renovate the road during the rainy season, adding that they should be patient, and wait for the rains to subside.
The MP, however, blamed the governors for being a stumbling block in the realization of road construction, disclosing that most of them want all roads to be under their watch. He said road construction work should be handled carefully, in a statement directed to governors.
He said the budgetary allocation for road construction is enormous and needs to be handled with a lot of caution terming the intention by governors to have several roads under their watch as an uphill task they will not fulfill.
He, however, called upon the two County chiefs from Trans Nzoia Patrick Khaemba and West Pokot Simon Kachapin to hold talks and put a levy on large trucks that usually pass through the county towards West Pokot.
He called upon the county assembly of Trans Nzoia to enact a law barring those trucks with huge loads from using the road by imposing heavy fines. He said Trans Nzoia County does not benefit from the heavy trucks that ply the route, adding that they should be able to get direct benefits from the venture.
