Cherangany MP Joshua Kutuny has called for the resignation of the Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri and his PS over the maize importation saga. Speaking to the press at parliament accompanied by other MPs, Kutuny said the Agriculture Ministry has already dished out Kshs 1.8 billion to cartels according to evidence they have, “A company called Commodity House has been paid Kshs 1.8 billion without the law being followed. This money is among that set aside to buy maize this year,” said Kutuny.
He said CS Kiunjuri disregarded the opinion of the Strategic Food Reserve, “The law is very clear that you cannot any expenses in that account and unless you get the approval of the SFR via minutes tabled,” he said, adding that the CS should pave way and let the matter be handled by relevant authorities.
On his part, Saboti MP Caleb Amisi said the Agriculture CS should have resigned by now, “A minister..who has overseen a collapse of a major backbone of the economy, we are talking about the sugar industry that has collapsed under his watch, we are talking about sorghum, pyrethrum, tea, coffee they have all collapsed.” He said leaders who come from the agricultural region won’t watch as farmers suffer.
