ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi has reiterated that the presidency isn’t a guaranteed position for anyone, saying it isn’t an automatic succession for vice president William Ruto. During his visit to the Coast, Mudavadi said only retired President Daniel Arap Moi had a straight pass, “People should know that nothing is automatic, except for Moi alone, who succeeded the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta directly,” he said, “All the other who were vice presidents didn’t become presidents automatically.”
Despite the now famous handshake, he said leaders and Kenyans, in general, shouldn’t forget to perform their oversight role, adding that democracy must have an opposition, “Please play your oversight role as parliament, make sure you check the programs of the government,” he said.
The ANC leader made public his desire to vie for the presidency in 2022. His announcement is expected to draw different reactions from different quarters, with calls to set aside 2022 politics and focus on development already a common rhetoric.
