Mukonge primary school in Lugari Sub County is at the moment staring closure following the collapse of latrines after a heavy downpour currently pounding the area.
According to the school’s Head Teacher, Mr David Wafula Simiyu, six latrines used by girls collapsed after the heavy downpour.
With an estimated population of over 480 girls, the school has now been left with only four latrines for use.
This has consequently put the health of pupils in a precarious position as they are likely to get infected with contagious diseases
“The primary section has a total of 412 girls while we have 68 in ECDE and with only four latrines remaining the situation is pathetic,” said Mr. Wafula.
A public health report reveals that the four latrines were capable of serving only 100 girls whereby each latrine is supposed to be shared by 25 pupils.
The school management is now appealing for financial help from stakeholders and well-wishers in order to enable it put up new latrines, “otherwise we risk being served with closure notice by the department of public health,” added the concerned school head.
