Munyuki residents in Lumakanda location, Lugari Sub County have raised concern over the increased number of bodies being retrieved from Kipkaren river in the area.

Speaking after a decomposed body of an unknown man was discovered Thursday evening floating on water in the river, the residents led by John Odera said it was shocking every month an average of three bodies were being retrieved from the river.

They appealed for thorough investigations in the incidents to establish whether the deaths are accidental, suicidal or murder.

“It’s shocking that every month an average of three bodies are retrieved from this river, some of them are known and others like this one are unknown, we are appealing to the security apparatus to do investigations and unravel the cause of these deaths,” they said.

The Thursday evening badly decomposed body was discovered by Mr. Ayub Murunga Makokha who was fishing in the river.

“I had come to fish in this river when I spotted an object floating on the water, at first I thought it was a pig because of the color but when I moved closer and looked carefully, I realized it was a human body,” said Ayub who informed the villagers and later managed to tie the body to prevent it from being washed further down the river.

The village elder William Elung’ata said the body might have been carried by water from elsewhere saying there was no report of a missing person in the area.

“This person is unknown, I have even communicated to madam chief Celestine Asige and she has told me that there’s no  report of a missing person in the entire location and we therefore suspect this body was carried by water from elsewhere to this place,” said the village elder.

Officers from Lumakanda police station were called to remove the body and launch investigations into the incident.
