A baby was rescued after being abandoned by an unknown person in a sugarcane plantation at Kabrengu in Matete, Kakamega county. According to area children officer Mr. Jackson Murunga the baby was discovered by a passer-by who alerted him.
“A good Samaritan who was passing near the farm heard a baby crying inside the plantation and when he moved closer he was shocked to find the little angel wrapped well in a towel and abandoned there. He informed me before I alerted police and we rushed to the scene and rescued the baby boy,” explained Murunga.
According to Mr. Murunga, the mother may have dumped the baby there a few moments after delivery. After recording the details at Matete police station Mr. Murunga said he took the baby to Matete health centre where he was examined by a medic who confirmed that he was in good health, weighing 4kg.
Murunga said its suspected either of the parents comes from the village
where the baby was found. “We suspect that if the mother is not from around this place, then the man responsible for her pregnancy must be a resident of this village. The mother may have decided to abandon the baby here after the father refused to take responsibility,” said Murunga.
Murunga who is currently taking care of the baby appealed to members of the public to avail information to his office which will lead to the identification of the mother adding he was liaising with the police to identify the parents of the baby.
He, however, regretted the cases which he said had become rampant in the area after another baby believed to be one month old was also rescued a fortnight ago after he was found abandoned in a sugarcane plantation at Chimoi, less than a kilometre from Kabrengu.
