Residents of Naburereya and Kibachenje villages in Kabula and South Bukusu wards, Bumula constituency, Bungoma County are a dissatisfied lot after persistent efforts to get the government to construct a bridge across river Sio to ease transport activities have become futile.
The residents say during the rain season, the river overflows, rendering the footbridge impassable, adding that the school going children have to use an alternative route which is more than ten kilometers away to get to school.
One of the residents, Leonard Nato, said their children risk drowning in the river and have to seek help from grown ups to cross the river, saying it is tedious and the government has not pledged to salvage the situation.
Mary Wanyonyi, another resident, said she is always on standby to help the children cross the river in the morning, lunch time and in the evening.
However, a well wisher, Zack Barasa who hails from Kabula ward took the initiative of constructing the road and the bridge.
