Nandi County government through the Ministry of Environment is set to kick start the mass tree planting exercise of about Three thousand tree seedlings, an exercise slated to commence next month.
Speaking during the tree planting exercise at Kapsabet girls, the chief executive committee member of the environment docket in Nandi Dr Philemon Bureti said the government has identified areas to conduct the exercise and will be kick starting as from the month of June.
Bureti cited that Nandi County despite having rich soils and rainfall, it has not been able to attain the required forest cover, thus are working with various stakeholders including banks to ensure the region attains the required percentage of the forest cover.
“Right now our forest cover in Nandi is at sixteen percent and we need to improve it to above twenty percent and this will only be achieved through mass tree planting and conservation of the environment,” stated Bureti
On the other hand, Nandi forest conservator Mr. Kenneth Kitur said the ministry will work hand in hand with various environmental stakeholders to ensure the forest cover requirement of twenty plus percent is achieved through mobilization of mass tree planting exercise.
“We want more donors to come and support us in this initiative especially the banks for us to achieve our target,” urged Kitur
He has called upon Nandi residents to embrace tree planting exercise especially the indigenous trees which are good for the conservation of environment urging them to plant two trees whenever they cut one for conservancy.
