The Nandi Kaburwo council of elders have proposed further ways of honouring national heroes ahead of the Mashujaa Day fete slated for Saturday. The council has urged the national and County governments to identify and honour heroes by according them social security and state burials for those who are still alive.
The elders have also proposed the setting up of monuments in their honour and displaying their names for posterity and even naming streets after them. The naming of roads after national heroes will continue the earlier established format where there are existing roads named after nationally acclaimed leaders and influential heroes. Nandi County itself has birthed renowned heroes who not only fought for the rights of their people but also stood up for what the believed in, among them the famous Nandi Supreme chief Koitalel Arap Samoei, Barsirian Arap Manyei, Jean Marie Seroney and Philomena Chelagat Mutai among others.
The field of sports has also produced notable heroes from the region, among them Kenya’s first gold medalist Naftali Temu, International Association of Athletics Federations Hall of Fame inductee Kipchoge Keino, the current world marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge among others.
