Nandi Finance CEC Alfred Lagat has survived impeachment after some Nandi MCAs opposed the report by the ad hoc committee formed to probe the conduct of the CEC and the whole matter. After the impeachment vote, Lagat appeared before the ad hoc committee for grilling last week. MCAs had earlier voted to impeach Lagat on different accounts including the failure to clear pending bills.
In its report, the ad hoc committee recommended that the CEC be removed from office, noting he was unsuitable to continue serving residents. However, after the report was tabled, majority of the MCAs present shifted goal posts and shot down the report, with allegations surfacing that some MCAs were compromised. Out of the 36 MCAs present in the assembly during the debate, 25 rejected it on grounds that the formulation of the report didn’t follow the due procedures. Among the MCAs who were in favor of the CEC’s ouster were 6 elected led by Ollessos ward MCA Emmanuel Mengech and 5 nominated MCAs.
The outcome has angered Nandi residents who wanted the Fiance CEC to be removed from office due to the graft allegations, with questions facing MCAs who were elected to represent them.
