Nandi County government through cooperative societies has signed an agreement with the Sunripe Limited to export Nandi avocados at a price of Kshs. 92 per Kilogram for Hass variety.
Speaking during the deal, the Nandi executive committee member of Agriculture Dr Bernard Lagat said the agreement with the company is a sigh of relief to Avocado farmers in Nandi as they have found an international market to sell their produce.
Lagat urged Nandi residents to embrace avocado farming by investing and venturing into their business apart from tea, coffee and sugarcane farming which is being practiced by many farmers in North Rift region.
He added that majority of farmers in Nandi who were initially tea farmers have embraced the crop and are now ripping big from the Avocado farming especially the Hass variety which has a ready market in Europe.
Farmers who spoke to West Media concerning the Avocado farming cited that it is much easier to venture into it compared to other crops like tea which has a lot of work, saying Avocado requires less labor as it is harvested twice a year not regularly like tea.
Hass avocado farming is profitable to farmers because it has a ready International market for the locals.
Hass avocado experts have replaced major cash crops like tea, coffee and sugarcane and is the most popular Kenyan avocado produced for expert purposes.
