The County government of Nandi under the has entered into partnership with a group of professionals from North Rift region dubbed “Iriip Gaa”. It’s spearheaded by Lands Cabinet Secretary Faridah Karoney and Nandi deputy governor Dr. Yulita Cheruiyot and has come up with mentorship programs to empower the girl child.
Speaking during a mentorship program at Songhor/Soba ward in Tinderet constituency, Nandi County, Lands CS Faridah Karoney revealed that the dreams of many school going girls in the country have been spoiled due to teenage pregnancies and there is an urgent need to address the problem, the reason why the group was formed, “You have your future life in your hands so don’t allow anybody to ruin it,” she added.
CS Karoney asked the girls to avoid indulging in premarital sex, and urged them to uphold high standards of integrity while still young in order to guarantee a bright future. on her part, Nandi deputy governor Dr. Yulita Cheruiyot said the mentorship program will go along way towards empowering the girl child and supporting them physically, mentally, and lauded the CS for taking up the initiative. She revealed that Nandi County has been heavily affected by rising cases of teenage pregnancies during the Covid-19 pandemic, standing at at least 7,000. She said there should be concerted efforts from stakeholders to ensure the problem is addressed.
