Nandi Governor Stephen Sang has revealed that the National Lands Commission (NLC) recommended that the Privatization Commission should consider setting aside land to settle squatters in Nandi County. While giving his third state of the County address at the County Assembly of Nandi, Governor Sang said the squatters who’ll be part of the project are the Titans, Timur Nandi community, Nyando Valley Association and the Nandi Kaburwo council of elders.
He said the Commission largely agreed with the County government on many aspects of present and historical land injustices inflicted to Kalenjin community during the era of colonialism, where many lost their lives and property was also confiscated. Governor Sang also said that the Commission further directed that a survey is done on pieces of land held by tea estates across Nandi to establish if there is any residue to be held in trust for the Talai clan by the County government for public purposes. “The renewal of leases to these lands will be suspended until an agreement by the County government with these estates is reached,” he said.
In his speech, the Governor highlighted some of the achievements his government has accomplished in different departments saying they are finalizing some of the development projects they had initiated. In the health sector, the County administration is procuring ten ICU-type ambulances for emergency response and have employed ten medical officers, two specialists, sixty clinical officers and fifty nurses to improve service delivery. The County has also extended job contracts for over 1,300 County staff whose initial one-year contracts had expired.
