The Jamhuri Day celebration held at Kapsabet showground in Nandi Central was marred by chaos after a youth representative was heckled by residents for opposing the government.
Chaos erupted when he started attacking the county government for not delivering their promises to residents.
Two sides were evident, one supporting the government and the other stood on the opposing side, and they confronted each other, forcing security personnel to intervene, with the event coming to a standstill for about an hour.
One resident suspected of causing the disruption was arrested and taken to Kapsabet police station. While addressing the public after reading the President’s speech, Nandi county commissioner Lucy Mulili condemned vigorously the chaos while urging the public to respect such events.
Mulili asked political leaders to carry out mature campaigns and avoid using
youths to fight for their political agendas. She added that every leader has a right to deliver his or her speech without any disturbances, and urged the public to stop the vice of heckling leaders.
On the issue of security, the commissioner urged the bodaboda operators in Nandi to work together as one to report any suspected person whom they fear might pose a security threat.
Her call comes after the insecurity problem that has been witnessed in Kiptuiya ward following the brutal murder of two men by unknown assailants.
