Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei was arrested on Tuesday evening by DCI detectives on account of hateful utterances made at Kilibwoni primary school on August 17th. He was taken to Court to face charges of ethnic contempt c/section 62(1) of the National Cohesion and Integration Act and Incitement to Violence contrary to section 96(a) of the Penal Code. The Senator was released on a Kshs 300,000 cash bail and directed to deposit it by Wednesday noon, given that at the time of appearing in at the Milimani Court, it was too late to fulfill the required transactions.
Senator Cherargei had already been arrested back in August and was taken to Kisumu, due to his divisive remarks made at Kilibwoni and was later released on bail. He had warned Deputy President William Ruto’s detractors, saying that they are profiling them, “If you keep fighting the DP you are fighting us. Don’t think the Deputy President doesn’t have his people, we are here, keep insulting the DP, we are marking you and profiling you,” he said. After his release, he reiterated his innocence and called for peace.
